History of National Technology Day
As part of Operation Shakti, India carried out a series of nuclear tests in Rajasthan on May 11, 1998. Over the course of three days, these tests were successfully completed, establishing India as a nuclear power in the world. To honor the scientists that carried out the mission, the celebration of the event started in 1999.
Nine nations—including India, Russia, the US, China, France, the UK, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea—have the capacity to produce nuclear weapons, according to ICAN. Nuclear technology is being used in India to generate electricity.
National Technology Day 2023
The Day of National Technology Operation Shakti’s 25th anniversary is being celebrated in 2023, and each year a different theme is selected. In 2023, “School to Startups-Igniting Young Minds to Innovate” will be the theme of National Technology Day.
At Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, the government is holding an innovation showcase organized by Niti Aayog and the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). According to information provided by NITI Aayog, visitors will have the opportunity to visit several innovation zones, talk with student entrepreneurs and innovators, and become familiar with AIM’s projects and programs.
Promotion of science on National Technology Day
Although National Technology Day honors the accomplishments of Operation Shakti, its relevance in the contemporary period is even greater. On May 11, initiatives were made to showcase scientific and technological advancements in an effort to encourage people to pursue jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and help improve the nation’s scientific and technological capabilities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a celebration of National Technology Day’s 25th anniversary on Thursday. The program will take place from May 11 to May 14. Additionally, it is anticipated that the prime minister would lay the groundwork for several projects totaling over Rs. 5,800 crore.
These include the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Jatni, Odisha, and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory-India in Hingoli, Maharashtra. Additionally, the Prime Minister will lay the cornerstone for Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital’s Platinum Jubilee Block.
